Bar & Bat Mitzvah

Bar & Bat Mitzvah

Mazal Tov!

Your son or daughter is approaching their Bar or Bat Mitzvah! This is one of the most significant milestones in a young Jewish person’s life, marking their transition to the beginnings of adulthood in Jewish life and with it, the responsibility for observing the mitzvot (G-d’s commandments). At Bpark, we are committed to ensuring this journey is meaningful, engaging, positive and welcoming for you and your guests.

What is a Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

The moment when a young person becomes accountable for fulfilling mitzvot is called Bar Mitzvah (son of commandment) for boys and Bat Mitzvah (daughter of commandment) for girls. Boys reach this stage at 13, while girls do so at 12. This transition occurs on their Hebrew birthday. If you need assistance determining this date based on their time of birth, please contact the shul office.

At BPark, we aren’t prescriptive and work with each family to craft a meaningful experience that resonates with them.

Marking the Occasion

The most traditional option for a Bar Mitzvah boy is to be called up to read from the Torah and recite the brachot (blessings) on the first Shabbat morning after his 13th Hebrew birthday. This can also be done at other services where the Torah is read, such as Shabbat afternoons, Yom Tov, weekday mornings, Rosh Chodesh, Chol Hamoed, Purim or Chanukah.

Bat Mitzvah girls often mark the occasion by delivering a D’var Torah in shul on a Shabbat morning, which features as a main part of the service. Topics may include the weekly Torah portion, the meaning behind their Hebrew name, an upcoming festival, or a key mitzvah or Jewish value.  Other possible times to celebrate a Bat Mitzvah include a Friday night (in the summer months) and a Saturday night Havdalah service, marking the conclusion of Shabbat (in the winter months).

At Bpark, a Bar/Bat Mitzvah may be booked three years before the event itself.  Make sure to bookmark your son’s 10th or daughter’s 9th birthday so that you get in early with your preferred date!
